« Syl Kougaï is a very patient man. I have had this release in my pocket for about a year, while the beginnings of Open Music was emerging. Delays and mis-speaking meant that La Fille Verte remained unreleased, for no good reason and that was just fine with him. He must be a patient man to piece together an album like what we have here. This release is like one of those patchwork quilts your Nan would have kept in the back of a cupboard; cut together from random little pieces, it looks a little ugly in parts. You recognise little squares here and there but over all it’s a bit of a mess. Then you wrap it over you and it feels amazing. La Voix de L’Empereur, the second track is a series of concentric circles. Right in the middle is the super funky (yes, that’s right… funky) guitar lick, wrapped in a super compressed dubby bass, wrapped in some vacant folk vocalisations, further wrapped in some white wash machine noise warmth. R.Daneel is reminiscent of the Rephlex acid releases, but with a more frenetic and softly aggressive approach. In other words, much much better. And this is how it continues throughout the whole release – Little pieces of sounds you love and recognise from somewhere, shouldered out of the way by sounds you’ve never heard and it all feels right. »
